Visakhapatnam: Gadaba tribes of Alluri Sitharama Raju district have asked the State government not to deprive them from the right to fish in Thatipudi Reservoir. They are seething with over loss of livelihood following the decision not to allow them to eke out a living from fishing.
Social activist and former IAS officer EAS Sarma said on Monday that nearly 130 Gadaba Adivasi families of Mettapalem, Dabbalapadu and Jeedugulapadu villages of Ananthagiri mandal are seeking fishing rights and allotment of boats/nets to enable them to improve their livelihoods by taking up fishing activity in Thatipudi Reservoir, the construction of which caused their displacement decades ago.
Gadabas belong to a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG), notified as such by the State government. Sarma in a representation to the Fisheries Commissioner and the District Collector of ASR district said the local authorities are expected to reach out to them and ensure their wellbeing. He enclosed information on an ethnographic study on Gadabas, commissioned in the past by the State Tribal Welfare Department.
The activist requested the authorities to ask the ITDA to contact them, get further details and extend whatever help they are in need of.
